On May 8–9, 2025, the Plastic Recycling Program in Southern Nigeria (PReP) implemented by TechnoServe and funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation delivered a transformative two-day training in Awka, Anambra State, aimed at strengthening the business and environmental capacities of plastic waste aggregators and recyclers.
Held at the Golden Tulip Hotel, the training brought together 29 passionate aggregators who have been onboarded into the PReP program. Facilitated by independent consultants Cajetan Okeke and Benedine Obiekea, the sessions were practical, engaging, and deeply insightful.
Day One: Strengthening Business Foundations
The first day focused on business management essentials. Participants explored topics such as:
- Overview of plastic waste management in Nigeria
- Steps toward business formalization
- Branding, online visibility, and marketing strategies
- Sound financial practices
- Entrepreneurship and business planning
Many participants shared real-life challenges in managing their operations, and the facilitators provided tailored advice and solutions to help them scale sustainably.
Day Two: Environmental Management for Impact
On the second day, attention shifted to environmental practices and compliance. Key topics included:
- Environmentally Sound Management (ESM) of plastic waste
- Understanding and complying with local and national regulations (e.g., ASWAMA, NESREA)
- Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) protocols
- Fair compensation and workforce safety
Participants were encouraged to register with regulatory bodies and professional associations like the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN), with practical tips provided to overcome typical bottlenecks in the registration process.
Measured Impact
Quizzes and pre/post-training surveys revealed that participants gained significantly in both knowledge and confidence. Many expressed that the training provided clarity, structure, and motivation to improve their operations.
This initiative marks another step forward in equipping local actors with the skills and knowledge to drive Nigeria’s circular economy. As one participant shared, “This training opened my eyes to how I can grow my business the right way while protecting the environment.”
